Craps Rules

Despite multiple bet types and defined game rounds, craps rules are relatively straight forward and easy to master. Although there are two popular versions of this quick fire dice game – street craps and banker’s or casino craps – the craps game rules are predominantly the same. Street craps is an informal dice game played on the bustling street corners of big cities. Banker’s craps is played at a craps table in a formal setting and has made an indelible impression online. General Craps Rules

Craps comprises two betting rounds; the come out roll and the point phase. You have to bet on the outcome of the come out roll to be able to progress further in the game. There are only two possible bets types that are diametrically opposed to each other – pass line bets and don’t pass line bets. The objective of the come out roll is to determine the point number which is the total value displayed on the two die. Bet types and craps rules pertaining to the come out roll are as follows:

  • Pass line bets are wagers on the probability of the dice displaying 7 or 11.
  • Don’t pass line bets are bets on the come out roll totalling 2 or 3.

If a total of 7 or 11 is rolled in the come out roll, don’t pass line bets lose while pass line bets are paid out even money. When 2, 3 or 12 is rolled, all pass line bets lose, don’t pass line bets pay out 1:1 and push on 12. The round is deemed a natural and ends prematurely. Roll 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 or 10 and it automatically becomes the point number, the game enters the point phase and you can place a litany of additional bet types that pay out attractive craps odds.

Point Phase Craps Game Rules

During the point phase betting focuses entirely on the point number and 7. To win the pass line bet you have to roll the point number again. If any other total, other than 7 or the point, is achieved on the dice you either win or lose according to the future prospects you have wagered on. Craps odds are directly determined by the mathematical probability of hitting a particular total. The higher the pay out the more difficult it is to achieve the said total on the dice. Proposition bets that generate mouth watering pay outs up to 30:1, for instance, are big money betting lures that appear hugely attractive. The probability of correctly predicting the exact total in a future roll of the dice is however no easy task!

Casino Craps Rules vs. Street Craps Rules

Street craps rules apply to shooting dice, an informal game that is played on dusty street corners throughout the world. There is no craps table or layout on which to place the myriad bet types associated with casino craps. Betting is consequently restricted to pass, don’t pass and come bets that also make an appearance in casino or banker’s craps. Street craps rules largely differ from casino craps rules in that there is no banker. This means players wager against the shooter and each other unlike in casino craps where you bet against the house.

The shooter, who changes each round, opens the betting with a pass or don’t pass wager and each bettor is expected to cover the shooter’s bet. Once the bet is covered, the players bet against each other and the shooter rolls the dice using exactly the same come out craps rules as above. After the point is established, pass bets transform into come bets which are wagers on the point appearing before 7 in the next roll or series of rolls.

Casino Craps Payouts

Popular bet types are paid out according to the following craps odds:

  • 1:1 – pass line, don’t pass line, come and don’t come bets
  • 2:1 to 6:5 – pass/come buying the odds
  • 1:2 to 5:6 – pass/come laying the odds
  • 1:1 to 2:1 – field bets
  • 2:1 to 6:5 – buy bets
  • 1:1 to 5:6 – lay bets
  • 4:1 to 30:1 – proposition bets
  • 7:1 to 9:1 – hard way/big bets
